Our Steps to becoming a foster parent!

1

FALL IN LOVE

We want the right dog in the right home and the right home for the right dog. That includes when you are fostering a dog with us. We have no idea how long a foster dog will be with us so we want to make sure everyone is happy. Most people find the dog they want to foster by the "Urgent Photo Albums" of dogs on Facebook. These dogs only have hours to count so we understand that may be how you found us.

2

APPLICATION

Fill out our foster application and send it in for approval. Once our team has received your application we start reviewing and doing all our checks. This includes calling your current vet for reference and a home check as well among other things that might be necessary for the dog/applicant.

3

SET UP A MEETING

When an application has been approved we set up a one-on-one meeting with the current dog you may be interested in, if already in our care or it's time to head on over to the shelter to pick them up.

4

GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER

When you get the foster pup to your house start learning each other as we setup a vet visit with one of our vets near you. Pets coming out of a shelter will need immediate vet attention and we will arrange together to get this done in a timely manner.

5

TIME TO FIND FOREVER

After your foster dog has had all needs taken care of and ready for adoption it's time to list them on our site and show them off at adoption events.

6

LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER

I know it may be heartbreaking once your foster pet has found a forever home but just know you did the right thing by saving a life and now you can save more lives with us!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the adoption process?

H3R is committed to making every effort in matching the right family for the right dog, and the right dog for the right family. We care about your foster babies as much as you do and we want the best for them. In order to adopt one of our dogs, potential adopters must fill out an application that allows us to know more about their lifestyle, living situation, what kind of dog that they are looking for, unacceptable behaviors, etc. Applications must be approved before there is ever a meet and greet set up. If for any reason there are any "red flags" we share the application between all board members for future decision making. We will then contact to potential adopter with any questions, concerns, and conduct a phone interview. Afterwards a meet and greet is setup and if everything meets matches up we will further the adoption process with a home visit and adoption contract.

Does H3R have adoption events?

We do not have adoption events on the regular but we are not opposed to having them. Our dogs are primarily adopted through PetFinder, our website, word of mouth and our Facebook page. However just because someone wants to adopt from an adoption event does not mean they by pass the normal adoption process and our fosters will always return with their foster pet. We know that sometimes our foster parents may not be able to attend an adoption event and that will not limit your fostering with us. We can make arrangements in most cases to have the foster dog at events, such as another volunteer picking them up and dropping them back off to you.

What if my foster dogs adopters are out of state?

We do allow out of state adoptions if requirements are met as usual, however we do not expect our foster parents to make long drives to meet out of state potential adopters. It will be arranged for one of our board members to handle the situation when it arises.

How long will I keep a pet?

It's impossible to predict how long an animal will remain in foster care. Some pets are adopted within a few days of becoming available. Others wait a few months for a home. H3R will NEVER euthanize an animal for taking too long to be adopted. We are a team of committed volunteers to find the perfect home for each pet and family.

What if I get attached?

It's normal to become attached to your foster pet and we expect it. We also know it's hard to give them up when the time comes but always remember you will be saving the life of another pet when foster dog is adopted. If you do decide that you can't part with your foster pet, that's ok, too. Foster parents can go through the adoption process and become a proud pet parent like any other adopter. The important thing is to think about what is in the animal's best interest. Sometimes, even if we love them, the best thing for the pet is to let them go.

Foster Application

We are currently working on an online version of our Foster application but to ensure we don't miss anything we are checking everything twice. Below you can click to open our application in Microsoft Word format. Thank you for patiently waiting while we continue to work on this. If you need assistance please contact us. - H3R
